Cold Compress Packs
Cold compress packs should be used after a sprain or twist or as a remedy to muscle soreness. Since cold compress packs store well you can easily keep several in your first aid kit; especially in a sports or outdoor activity first aid kit since sports injuries are usually the reason most people need to use a cold pack. Cold temperatures slow and minimize blood flow, by using a cold compress you can prevent swelling, or the excessive buildup of fluids. It is commonly thought to only ice fresh injuries, but any inflammation injury should be chilled, including slipped discs in the back. By icing a slipped disc you can reduce swelling, hopefully allowing the disc to slide back into place.
Cold compress packs work by harnessing a chemical reaction to generate cold temperatures. A cold pack features a pouch containing a chemical compound that floats inside another more durable pouch that also contains water. By squeezing the bags and breaking the inner pouch the chemical compound and water mix and the ensuing reaction creates very cold temperatures. Cold packs are so useful because you do not need to have access to a freezer, like you do for ice. Since the outer bag of a cold compress is designed to be durable (it does not break when the inner pouch does), you also do not need to worry about leaking, like you do with ice-based cold packs.
As with all first aid supplies, make sure you check your cold compress packs out from time to time. Look for damage and replace the packs if there are any punctures or tears. Do not store cold compress packs in the freezer since that can cause frostbit if applied to the skin after the pack is activated.
