A disaster can range from car trouble or bad weather that leaves you stuck on the side of the road or unable to leave your home. A house fire or natural disaster also falls under the classification of disaster. Disasters can be so different in cause and nature and duration, but one thing all disasters have in common is that being prepared is your best bet to successfully pull through. Making sure you have a disaster first aid kit puts the power to take control of the situation in your hands.
A disaster first aid kit has all the supplies you would expect to find in a regular first aid kit. You are sure to find adhesive bandages, gauze, tape, antiseptic and ointments, but you will also find items that can keep you save and as comfortable as possible if you are stuck or stranded and waiting for help. A disaster first aid kit may include a fire retardant blanket that can be used to put a fire out; it is especially helpful if you need to extinguish flames that are engulfing a person since the blanket can just be wrapped around them. High calorie food packs can tide you over if you are stranded and waiting for help for an extended period of time. Hand warmers and ponchos keep you warm and dry so you can be somewhat comfortable and protected from the elements while you wait for a storm to pass or power to be stored or help to arrive.
As with any first aid kit you should routinely check out the contents to make sure everything is fully stocked. Replace items that have been used up or that you are running low on. Check the expiration dates and re-stock on anything that is past its usefulness.
