Emergency Preparedness
Emergency preparedness has two basic elements; first aid and survival. First aid supplies and gear give you the tools necessary to mend minor injuries. Since just about anything can happen in an emergency you need to be ready to clean a skinned knee or stop bleeding or secure a broken bone until you can get to a hospital. In some instances you may need to use your first aid know-how to stabilize a serious injury that is beyond the scope of your kit. This is not a failure of your kit though; it is a success in your planning. The survival aspect of emergency preparedness allows you to pull through extended power outages, not being able to leave your home due to inclement weather or because of a state of emergency declaration, or being stranded on the roadside. First aid supplies can still come in handy in such a situation, but you also need supplies to keep you warm, protect you from the elements if you do not have shelter, and to keep you fed and hydrated. Making sure you have the gear to live up to these objectives means you are ready for anything.
