Eye Wash Stations
An eye wash station is a pivotal tool to keep your eyes healthy. Make sure you know and follow all state and federal laws regarding safety and eye wash stations in your area. Some places of employment are required by law to have eye wash stations. Schools, labs, restaurants, and more places must have eye wash stations so employees can rinse their eyes if debris, chemicals, or other irritants get into their eyes.
Any type of foreign material in the eye can potentially scratch or cause other types of damage to the eye; this can in turn impact one's vision. Eye wash stations let you quickly and easily rinse your eyes to remove irritants to prevent damage and harm. An eye wash station features eye wash fluid, usually saline, that can be administered directly into the eye. Some kits may feature a squeeze bottle with a dropper tip; other kits may feature an eye cup. Either device allows you to cleanse your eyes. To rinse your eyes you should hold your eye open (which can be difficult and uncomfortable, but is necessary) and continuously fill your eye with the provided solution. Make sure not to rub your eyes since this can press the debris into the inside of your lid or your eye and cause injury. Some eye wash stations may feature a mirror so you can inspect your eyes. Typically when irritants enter the eye you should continue to rinse for several minutes, even if you think the debris has been successfully flushed from the eye, continuing to rinse will remove any lingering contaminates and cleans any scratches or damage to the eye or the surrounding tissue.
