A procedure mask is intended to be worn by doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals while preforming surgery and during some treatments to catch the bacteria from the wearer's mouth and nose. The mask helps to maintain a clean environment and protects the patient and others from harmful germs that can be spread through coughing, sneezing, and even exhaling and breathing. Simply wearing the mask is usually enough to remind the wearer not to touch their nose and mouth which prevents the transfer of germs and bacteria from the wearer's hands to door knobs, light switches, faucets and other commonly touched surfaces. This too can help limit the spread of viruses and illness.

Wearing procedural masks has become the norm is some parts of Asia to prevent the spread of illness. In some areas people with a common cold will wear a face mask when out in public so as to not spread the illness. While less common outside of parts of Asia and Japan some people who work in social jobs that require them to come into contact with others may wear a mask if they feel a cold coming on. Daycare workers, receptionists, and hospital and nursing home staff commonly take this precaution to protect others.
